there is a song that everyone learns at church when they start out in the nursery, or attended any type of VBS or just hang around someone who has a young kid and sings songs -- this song has found mass hysteria in the CCM realm -- well i call it mass hysteria. this little light of mine. now i am not saying this is a bad song. it is a great song - with some great moves and can i just say that don't we all love to sing songs that have movements to them? but i have been thinking about that song.
first, i thought -"i have a light?" yep - sure do. Matthew 5:14-16 niv “You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven." (my emphasis added)
then i considered "so if i have a light - where did it come from?" good question right? well, verse 14 says that i am the light of the world - but i have heard that before -- John 8:12 niv When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." pretty awesome right?
you see, when we come to accept the lordship of Christ in our hearts and follow Him - He comes and takes up residence in us. Romans 10:9 niv That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord", and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Galatians 2:20a niv tells us - I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. so Jesus says he is the light of the world, and when i come to confess my faith in Him, then he dwells in me, which means the Light of the world is in me! In John 15 Jesus talks of being the True Vine and those who believe as branches and that those who remain in Him then He will remain in them as well! so if the Light of the World is in us and we continue to live in Him, then won't the light that we shine really be that of Christ? and if Galatians 2:20a tells us that our lives are not our own (if we follow Christ) then its not my light at all that I am carrying - it is the Christ-light!
i will stop here and let you ponder these thoughts and then later this week i will briefly discuss why i think it is exciting and important that i am carrying the Christ-light.
