"Why do you call me, 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do what I say? I will show you what he is like who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice. He is like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it because it was well built. But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete." Luke 6:46-49 niv
i don't want to trade the Word for something else. i don't want to catch a peek at it or just glaze over its truth. i don't want to "...merely listen to the word and so deceive yourselves." but would rather "Do what it says." James 1:22 niv (both quotes) lest the storms of this life knock me down and i find that i was trusting in warm fuzzies and oodles and oodles of entertainment.
i found that this guy put into words what i have been thinking for quite some time now:
"The gospel reveals eternal realities about God that we would sometimes rather not face. We prefer to sit back, enjoy our cliches, and picture God as a Father who might help us, all the while ignoring God as a Judge who might damn us. Maybe this is why we fill our lives with the constant drivel of entertainment in our culture - and in the church. We are afraid that if we stop and really look at God in his Word, we might discover that he evokes greater awe and demands deeper worship than we are ready to give him." - excerpt from Radical by David Platt, my emphasis added.
i will be looking at just what God calls me to do, through his Word, and with the good Lord's help, not merely listening but doing.
